The National Institute of Science and Technology Klimapolis conducts transdisciplinary research on the climate and environmental resilience of Brazilian urban areas through Real-World Experiments. Its goal is to make studies on assessment, scenarios, and solutions for climate change adaptation and sustainable development more accessible.
INCT Klimapolis was approved by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), in December 2022, for an initial period of five years.
The construction of the German–Brazilian Klimapolis Network began in 2017, supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, with the aim of bringing together efforts related to climate issues in Brazilian urban centers. Over the years, the network has focused on promoting events and research on air pollution and topics related to climate governance in cities. Following the approval of INCT Klimapolis in 2022, the initiative was expanded and is now organized around five interdisciplinary research fronts: Air and Noise, Water and Soil, Climate Variability, Climate Change Adaptation, and Health and Well-Being. One of its main objectives is to carry out two Real-World Experiments in the capital cities of Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo.
The General Coordinator of INCT Klimapolis is Professor Maria de Fátima Andrade, from the University of São Paulo. The Deputy Coordinator is Professor Judith Hoelzemann, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Together, they work with other leading researchers from several cities in Brazil and around the world.
